Fresh Frozen

Fresh Frozen is Achille Succi's last work in progress, together with pianist Christopher Culpo.

Alto saxophonist, clarinet and bass clarinetist, Succi in fact recorded as sideman a lot of the italian jazz production, and played with some of the most important italian and foreign musicians.

Enthusiastic reviews, prizes and concerts that made him touring all italian venues are countless; he's also a very requested teacher among italian conservatories and jazz workshops, from SienaJazz to Berklee college in Boston.

It's here, in the composition, that we can grasp the deepest nature of an eclectic musician as Achille Succi. In his work we find his most inner identity, willingness to express a precise idea.

In the eleven tracks of Fresh Frozen (signed by Succi and Culpo and recorded in a trio with the addition of Oren Marshall on tuba) dualism between past (frozen) and present (fresh) manifests itself in all its ambivalence: writing and improvisation are claimed and radicalised, thesis and antithesis of a synthesis that Succi pursues in every song.

Fresh Frozen leaves no room to melodic or harmonic compromises. In many of the songs (Sbach, Smallips, Wabi) breathes the rigour of thought and counterpoint, and emerges the strict construction of the rule, of the compositional principle. But a moment after, comes inevitable the immediate willingness to transgress, to thaw the field. Never, however, with "muscular" aggressiveness of the rebel, but with slight irreverence of intelligence, of irony.

In the project Fresh-Frozen, the musicians Achille Succi, Christopher Culpo, and Glauco Benedetti leave no room for melodic concessions, and do not compromise on the harmonic or formal aspects of the music. The rigor of thought and contrapuntal writing and the strict principles of compositional construction contrast with the need to exit the path, to thaw the material. Never with the "muscular" aggression of the rebel, but with the slight irreverence of intelligence and irony.
